Overcoming The Sinful Nature- What We Must Know

Overcoming the Sinful Nature

Many Christians and non-believers have wondered if it is really possible to live above sin. Is overcoming the sinful nature we came into this world with just one of those religious myths?

The Greek rendering of the word sin is to miss a mark, that is, once you are told what to do and what not to do. Immediately you don’t meet up to the standards you miss the mark, that is what sin is.

Going the Biblical route, any time we go against the word and will of God, we sin. Sin does not only mean when we offend God by our words, thoughts and actions, it happens also when we fail to be compassionate and fair with our neighbors.

Our sins and flaws can either be as a form of weakness, ignorance, oblivion or plain wickedness(against God and man).

Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, our mortal lapses just show up. For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). None is perfect. Only God is.

So do we wallow in our deficient nature? The coming of Jesus would then be defeated if we do so.

The Original Sin

By virtue of the fall of Adam and Eve, our sinful nature was birthed. Inherent in every man is the free will to either delay or expressly gratify personal pleasures and desires. This was the case with our first parents.

Man fell away from the glorious presence of God. As the Bible says, nothing unclean will be found in the majesty of HIS holy presence. To bridge this divide, God makes a redemption plan to bring us back into our initial place of love and glory.

Jesus- The Redemption Plan

For there is no other name by which we are saved. Jesus bore it all- the curse, uncleanness, captivity to our sinful nature and strongholds the devil made by virtue of the first fall of man.

It took the blood and death of A GOD to restore the relationship we severed in a moment of weakness and greed. Only the blood of Jesus could set us free.

This is the deepest love there could ever be till eternity. The love that counts no cost. It is in the knowledge and believing of this love that we become more than conquerors in overcoming the sinful nature that held us bound.

So Is Overcoming The Sinful Nature Possible?

“Not by the will of he that runneth …” We need God to rise into the glorious place where we yearn and value the powerful worth of purity.

As a matter of fact, God has done it all. What we owe ourselves is to believe and let God have HIS rightful place in our hearts. As always, God wants us to deliberately choose to be HIS as HE chose and loved us first.

Choosing God means getting closer to God. We can today dare to claim a relationship with God because of the righteousness of Jesus. This is the righteousness that covers all who BELIEVE.

In other words, when God looks at us, HE sees the righteousness of Jesus. Why would we want to lose this privilege?

There is no sin that you cannot overcome. For HE came not for the righteous but sinners like us (Matthew 9:12), that we may benefit in HIS own righteousness.

As far as overcoming the sinful nature goes, Jesus is the only solution. HE has given us power and grace to overcome

For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him – 2 Corinthians 5:21.

For sin is not to have any power over you, since you are not under the law but under grace – Romans 6:14.

Why Do Christians Still Sin?

The eternal consequence of the fall in Eden is the constant battle between the flesh and the spirit. We know what to do, we want to do it but end up in the opposite direction.

For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Miserable one that I am! Who will deliver me from this mortal body? Romans 7:22-24

Well, you need to understand that you are still wearing your flesh and sometimes we still find ourselves falling short. Regardless, the sacrifice of Jesus still towers above the spirit-flesh struggles that we face regularly.

The grace of God is boundlessly available to overcome. Hence St Paul goes further to says:

Yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me – Galatians 2:20

It is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me… And if any man be in Christ, he’s a new creation. Old things have passed away and all things have become new.

Conclusion

Take hold of what Christ has done for you, he has given you dominion over sin by paying with his life. Overcoming our sinful nature is possible:

  • When we believe and respect the sacrifice of Jesus; Study the WORD
  • Pray with all our hearts
  • Mortify- Regular fasting
  • Be conscious of your thoughts and actions. Align them to the word of God
  • And go each second of our lives with the encompassing love of God in our hearts.

It is only the love of God that can give fruits to all we do to live a life pleasing to HIM. Love covers a multitude of sins. Love conquers ALL.
